5 Epic Oregon Waterfalls

Where are the Best Waterfalls in Oregon?

Many of Oregon’s waterfalls are found clustered near each other in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, in a spot known as the “waterfall corridor”. Starting May 24th 2022, timed use permits will be required to drive your own vehicle in this area, to improve access due to congestion.

How Do I get a Timed Use Permit?

  • The permits are not available yet, and if you go before May 24th, you do not have to worry about it. Check Oregon’s DOT page, to get up to date information.

Which Waterfalls Should I See in Oregon?

There are 238 waterfalls in Oregon - how do you choose? We decided to spend our time seeing the waterfall corridor, where we could several in just one day. The Columbia River Gorge is home to 90 waterfalls on the Oregon side, and is a great place to start your waterfall adventure. All of the waterfalls below are not only gorgeous, but they are all near proximity to each other.

  1. Multnomah Falls

This is the most popular and well-known waterfall in Oregon. You can view the entire waterfall from a lower location, and the upper drop, from a bridge. This waterfall is so majestic because it is 620 feet heigh and has two drops and is fairly easy to access (1.2 miles to the top).

2. Wahkeena Falls

Wahkeena is also located in the “waterfall corridor” and my personal favorite because it was not nearly as crowded as Multnomah Falls and the mossy walls and vibrant blue waterfalls were stunning. The trail is only 3.1 miles out and back to see the 242 ft beauty.

3. Lower Oneonta Falls

This waterfall is located in the Oneonta Gorge, within the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Another easy waterfall to access, with a .6 mile out and back hike, this 100 ft waterfall is stunning (and very popular). It was actually difficult to get a decent photo, as there were so many people visiting the day we went, and you can walk right up to the base of the waterfall through shallow waters. Note: The section of the trail to reach the waterfall is currently closed due to the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire but plans are underway to reopen the trail once it is deemed safe. Check here for to check the status.

4. Ponytail Falls

Ponytail falls (also known as Upper Horsetail Falls) is just a short .5 miles away from the road. It is a unique hike, as the trail leads behind the waterfall, which is a fun experience.

5. Horsetail Falls

This is the easiest waterfall to access as it is right off of the Columbia River Highway. Many visitors were wading in the icy cold waters to get photos next to the waterfall’s base.
